2025 Cocoa Barometer launched
We’ve just released the 2025 Cocoa Barometer, offering a comprehensive look at today’s cocoa sector. Amid record-high prices, crop failures, and climate shocks, small-scale farmers continue to bear most of the risk.
“Since the last Cocoa Barometer was released, the cocoa sector has gone through some of its most turbulent times ever. In the middle of a global context that can sometimes feel like the winter of despair, the current state of cocoa should show that we are also in a spring of hope.” — Antonie Fountain, VOICE Network
Despite high market prices, most farmers remain in poverty, trapped by climate stress, crop loss, and unfair trading practices. This poverty continues to fuel deforestation, child labour, and gender inequality, while today’s production boom risks another future price crash. Meanwhile, the EU’s recent political backlash threatens to roll back hard-won human rights and environmental due diligence regulations — a dangerous move at a critical time.
Still, the report shows that systemic change is possible through strong collaboration and bold regulation. The Barometer also looks back at 15 years of the VOICE Network as we celebrate the progress we have made.
The Cocoa Barometer calls for urgent action:
- Fair pay: Commit to living incomes for farmers
- Protect forests: Enforce a global moratorium on cocoa-driven deforestation
- Equality: Include women and men farmers equally in decision-making
- Transparency: Strengthen accountability across supply chains
